Women in Cardiology Buddy Scheme: Guidance for Buddies and Returners

Read

Purpose of the Buddy Scheme

The Women in Cardiology Buddy System is designed to offer informal peer support to those returning to work following a period of absence such as maternity leave, illness, or other personal reasons. It aims to ease the transition back to work, reduce isolation, and provide a safe, understanding space for shared experiences.

Getting Started

Initial Contact

Once matched, we recommend that the buddy makes the first contact within 1 week of being paired.

  • Introduce yourself via email, message, phone call, zoom/teams.
  • Agree on a preferred method and frequency of contact going forward.
  • Schedule your first meeting or chat (virtual or in person).

Suggested Frequency of Contact

  • First 6–8 weeks: Fortnightly check-ins (more frequent if needed).
  • After settling in: Monthly or as needed.
  • Flexible: The relationship should adapt based on the returner’s needs.

Note: This is not a formal mentorship – it's about mutual support, empathy, and informal advice.

Ideas for Discussion Topics

Before Returning

  • Planning a phased return to work
  • Childcare challenges and logistics
  • Managing expectations and anxiety
  • Updating on changes in the department/team
  • Confidence about clinical re-engagement

After Returning

  • Managing clinical duties after a break
  • Dealing with fatigue, overwhelm, or imposter syndrome
  • Time management and prioritisation
  • Keeping up with training or CPD requirements
  • Emotional wellbeing and self-compassion
  • Reintegrating with colleagues or new team members

Confidentiality and Boundaries

  • Respect privacy and maintain confidentiality unless someone is at risk of harm.
  • Buddies are not responsible for formal career advice, counselling, or conflict resolution.
  • Encourage the returner to seek support from supervisors, occupational health, or HR if needed.

If Things Aren’t Working

We recognise that not all pairings will be perfect. If you feel that the match isn’t meeting your needs, please don’t hesitate to contact:

We would be happy to discuss alternative support or re-matching.

Final Thoughts

This initiative is built on mutual respect, kindness, and a shared understanding of how challenging returning to work can be. Whether you're supporting or being supported, your participation makes a real difference in strengthening our community.

Thank you for taking part.
