Returning to work after a period of absence? Join our buddy scheme!

We are delighted to announce the return of the Women in Cardiology Buddy Scheme, an initiative designed to support colleagues as they return to work following maternity leave, illness, carer responsibilities, or other extended time away.

This informal peer-support system connects returning cardiologists with experienced colleagues who can offer a listening ear, share practical advice, and provide encouragement during what can often be a challenging transition back to work.

Who is it for?

  • Returners: Anyone coming back after maternity leave, sick leave (physical or mental health), a career break, or other personal circumstances.
  • Buddies: Women in cardiology who would like to support a colleague based on their own experience.
  • If you already signed up to our previous buddy scheme, please sign up again so we can update our records

How it works

  • Participants are matched based on role, experience, region, and preferences.
  • The buddy makes the initial contact and provides informal support by checking in regularly, offering encouragement, and being available to talk
    through challenges.
  • The relationship is flexible, informal, and confidential.

If you would like to be matched with a buddy or volunteer to be a buddy, please complete our short expression of interest survey. Please note: even if you've missed the initial email, we'd still love to hear from you.

More information

To learn more about what to expect as a buddy or returner, please read our Buddy Scheme Guidance Document which outlines how often to meet, suggested discussion topics, and what to do if you need further support.

The Supported Return to Training (SRTT) or SuppoRTT program is a national initiative designed to help doctors safely and confidently return to their training after a period of absence, typically three months or longer. It provides tailored support, including access to coaching, refresher courses, and supervised clinical sessions, to address the diverse needs of returning trainees
